Open Your Eyes You Can Fly Bass Solo - Steve Swallow

I didn't come to realize Steve Swallow's genius until after learning this solo. His ability to "solo" whilst keeping a solid bass background is unparalleled. Anyway, the video that the solo if off of can be found at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PNo1VqARE7Y. I didn't necessarily dig the tone of my bass in this solo but upon further listens, I found it was a good way to distinguish myself from Swallow's playing. Enjoy

The Slip-If One Of Us Should Fall (Bass Solo)

Just a quick little solo I learned on this rainy day in Austin. This version is off the album Eisenhower, but the song has been featured in past albums such as Alivelectric. If you haven't checked them out I highly recommend them. Enjoy

The Stroll Patrol - Ideofunk

Some Videos

The Stroll Patrol

This is a group that gets together every November for the holiday stroll that occurs every year in our hometown. We're usually home from college for turkey day, so we run a few tunes and head out into the cold. Yeah, about that... It's fucking cold. I don't know how many of you reading this (if any actually are) have played outside in the snow, but let me tell you... it fucking blows. Historically, we've gotten about a 3-4 hour slot to play in front of a little mom and pop store (which is awesome), but it's really cold. After maybe a song or two, your fingers will either go numb or be warmed up enough that it's manageable. Anyhow, here are a few clips I have of us playing.

Me - Guitar
Sean Morris - Bass
Andrew Cote - Drums

Ideofunk (Scofield)

P.S. apparently I can only upload one video per post so I'll continue this chain of videos in multiple posts.

The Slip- Yellow Medicine (bass solo)

Learned this solo last week. If you haven't heard of The Slip, you definitely need to check them out. Marc Friedman is the bass player for them and part of his genius can be seen in this solo. Hope you guys can dig. Enjoy

Incubus Summer Romance Sax Solo on Bass

After much frustration, I was finally able to get a decent take of the sax solo in Summer Romance (Anti Gravity Love Song) by Incubus. Learned this solo a little while ago. Dig it

Instrumental Work In Progress

10/1

I'll continuously update this with the most recent version.

First off, (in addition to being a theorist) I dabble in guitar, keys, drums, and some other stuff. Everything other than the guitar (which was recorded in my dorm) was/is being recorded back at my house.

I've pretty much got the basic structure and solos down. originally the rhodes solo was going to be temporary (just a one take fuck around), but after listening to it a million times, it's grown on me/i've come to just accept it as a solo. the synth solo was also just a fuck around first/one taker (to mess with the synth settings) but some how it turned out nasty. soooo i kept it... then earlier today i was messing with what i wanted for the guitar solo and couldn't figure something out. after a while I got a take that I'm pretty happy with. i've done better, but i'm not complaining.

I still need to work on the ending, the mellotron intro, possible additional guitar sprinkles, more rhodes work in the choruses, possibly some sax, + other things.

anyway, here it is for now (it's also pretty long)

p.s. blogspot needs to have a way to upload audio files. it's 100% original (no copyright issues) and i can't upload it... lame...

The Slip - The Weight Of Solomon (Solo)

Artist: The Slip
Song: The Weight of Solomon
Album: From The Gecko
Soloist: Timo Shanko (sax)

I learned this on guitar a while back and decided to write it out about a year ago. The timing of the actual solo is a little sloppy in places (it's still sweet though), so notating the rhythm was a bitch. I think it came out pretty well though. I'll post a vid of the solo on guitar eventually.

The Slip - Before You Were Born (Solo)

Artist: The Slip
Song: Before You Were Born
Album: Aliveacoustic
Soloist: Brad Barr (guitar)

I had asked Eugene what solo he really liked (to learn as his next solo/project). He had responded with "Before You Were Born" (among others), and I figured I'd write it out. This was about a year ago I guess? Yeah something like that. I should probably start dating these. Anyway, the solo's rad (and so is/are The Slip).

Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey - Hover (Head)

Artist: Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey
Song: Hover
Album: N/A
Soloist: Head

I neglected to notate which of the 10+ versions of this song I used to transcribe this head. Although, I would imagine they are relatively similar (aside from the various embellishments on live takes, etc). Also, depending on the version, the head sounds more and more like a conversation. It's fantastic. One of these

P.S. Reed Mathis is a genius
P.P.S. Reed Mathis is a god

Steely Dan - Reelin' In The Years (Solo)

Artist: Steely Dan
Song: Reelin' In The Years
Album: aja
Soloist: Elliott Randall (guitar)

Another transcription for my guitar lessons, I would like to start by saying that I do not approve of Randall's tone in this tune. It was a mild form of torture trying to write this out (with the scratchy, gritty tone gnawing at my ears). I also don't remember if I actually finished this one. Maybe I just did the first solo (if the outro is a second). I don't know... I'm bad with form.

Anyway, as I was posting this, I did a google search of this tune to find out who the soloist was. The first link that I came across was the "Reelin' In The Years" wiki. It said both that this was Jimmy Page's all-time favorite solo, and that it is the 40th best guitar solo of all-time by the readers of Guitar World magazine. To that I say, "really?" First off, I really don't care for Jimmy Page... at all... so his opinion means next to nothing. And secondly, the Guitar World poll just goes to show how unaware most people are of music that isn't fed to them by the industry. I really don't think that the solo in this tune is remotely close to Top 50 or even Top 250 caliber. Just listen to the sixth measure that I wrote out there (about 2:35 on the tune). Nuff said.

Steely Dan - Deacon Blues (First 4 min)

Artist: Steely Dan
Song: Deacon Blues
Album: Aja
Soloist: First 4 min

Also for guitar lessons, I had to write out a bunch of tunes offaja. I have only been able to find two of them though. I don't remember when I actually did these, however. Maybe sometime going into junior year? Anyway, this is just the first 4 min of "Deacon Blues" (chords and melodies) - it stops at the sax solo.

Al DiMeola - Race With Devil On Spanish Highway (Head)

Artist: Al DiMeola
Song: Race With Devil On Spanish Highway
Album: Elegant Gypsy Suite
Soloist: Head

This is the assignment I had immediately following the week where I transcribed "Elegant Gypsy Suite". It's just the head of the tune - really nothing special.

-capomatrice

Al DiMeola - Elegant Gypsy Suite (Intro/Head/1st Bridge)

Artist: Al DiMeola
Song: Elegant Gypsy Suite
Album: Elegant Gypsy Suite
Soloist: Intro/Head/First Bridge

This guy here was done back sometime during the summer between my freshman and sophomore years in high school. I had done it for a guitar lesson one week, and it was a real bitch at the time. It is also one of the first tunes I transcribed. I only did the intro, head, and first chorus-type break down. My penmanship back then was terrible (compared to as it is now).

-capomatrice

The Bad Plus - 1979 Semi-Finalist (Piano)

Artist: The Bad Plus
Song: 1979 Semi-Finalist
Album: Give
Soloist: Ethan Iverson (piano)

I transcribed this back in my junior year in high school. I worked on it off and on, but it ended up taking a few months to finish. In addition to transcribing it, I also learned it on piano (but have since forgotten it).

-capomatrice

update: I was fortunate enough to catch them at the Regatta Bar last month (Oct 2009). Of course, they were incredible... here's a link to a youtube video of them playing "Flim" (Aphex Twin) from one of their two 31st shows. It's sick how much fun they're having.

Dispatch - Carry You (Keaggy Solo)

Artist: Dispatch
Song: Carry You
Album: 2004.07.31
Soloist: Phil Keaggy (guitar)

I've always loved this solo (since I saw him play it at the Hatch), so I figured I'd write it out.

-capomatrice

The New Mastersounds - I Mean It So (Solo)

Artist: The New Mastersounds
Song: I Mean It So
Album: Plug & Play
Soloist: Eddie Roberts (guitar)

One of my friends was having trouble learning this, so I figured I'd take a listen to it. Somehow I got to writing, and I finished it in a few hours.

-capomatrice

John Scofield - Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get (Solo)

Artist: The John Scofield Band
Song: Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get
Album: Up All Night
Soloist: John Scofield (guitar)

I had originally started learning this for my old guitar teacher years ago, but I finally got around to transcribing it last spring.

-capomatrice

Here's the story...

We've been meaning to start this little project for quite some time now, but it seems we've finally gotten around to it. BAK is just a name for myself and a friend (Eugene and Josh). We play music/XBL/ together a bunch, and we just wanted a place to post the shit we do online/to share. Yeah, so basically, we'll be posting an assortment of our musical projects on here. These projects will include things like transcriptions, videos of learned solos, or original tunes. I'll go ahead and post a transcription I just finished about an hour ago to start this off.

Incubus - Summer Romance (Anti Gravity Love Song) (Solo)

Artist: Incubus
Song: Summer Romance (Anti Gravity Love Song)
Album: S.C.I.E.N.C.E
Soloist: Jeremy Messer (sax)

Eugene just finished learning the solo on bass, so I figured I'd write it out.
